KENYA - Oyugis rural clinics
October 12 - October 27, 2019 (15 days/14 nights)
One of the biggest challenges in Kenya is to make healthcare available to all of its citizens. With approximately half its population living in poverty, Kenya struggles to provide access to basic healthcare services and medical treatment to its citizens, especially those living in rural communities and the densely populated slums. The WHO African region remains most severely affected, with nearly 1 in every 25 adults (4.1%) living with HIV and accounting for nearly two-thirds of the people living with HIV worldwide.
The Kenyan health system consists of three main categories of service providers. Public providers, Private not-for-profit organizations (including faith-based and mission hospitals, local and international NGOs) and Private for-profit health care providers. Most health care facilities in Kenya are below international standards with limited resources, and limited capabilities. Public hospitals are understaffed, poorly equipped and lack supplies. This results in a variety of health conditions related to the problems in this region.
We bring volunteers to this region with the objective to strengthen and improve health outcomes for people in the communities. Through health assessment, primary care and preventive community education we strive to reduce the morbidity in the populations we serve.
Project Helping Hands has been sending teams to rural communities near by Oyugis a large town located West Central Kenya that is an important commercial and financial center of the area for several years improving the health system in the communities we serve.
